In the heart of our Mozambique studio, JASKILL, a transformation is taking place. It is a movement that transcends the canvas, turning traditional techniques into a global dialogue of empowerment. Today, we are proud to introduce the cornerstone of our first collection: “Mama Afrika” (The Royal Gaze).
The Art of the Encounter
To look upon Mama Afrika is to be looked upon in return. This is not a passive portrait; it is an encounter. Created through the meticulous, rhythmic process of Batik, the piece carries a physical history in its very fibers.
The “crackle” of the wax resist creates a topographic map of time across her face, suggesting a wisdom that predates the medium itself. With a crown bearing the star of Mozambique, she stands as a pillar of sovereignty. The symmetry of her gaze—framed by ceremonial red geometry and weighted by the rings of her neck—demands a specific kind of silence from the viewer. It is the silence of respect.
From Studio to Global Guild: Our Mission
This piece marks the beginning of a vital new chapter for the Faculty of Arts. Our Guild is more than a collective; it is an incubator for talent where artists from the JASKILL studio come to:
- Reclaim the Narrative: Telling ancestral and contemporary stories on their own terms.
- Master the Creative Process: Melding traditional craftsmanship with world-class production standards.
- Economic Empowerment: Ensuring that the “Royal Gaze” creates a sustainable future for the hands that drew it.
The Limited Edition: Japanese Craft Meets African Soul
To honor the depth of the original Batik, we have chosen a printing medium that respects the artist’s intent. These limited edition prints are produced on Japanese museum-quality substrate, over a centimeter thick, using water-based digital inkjet technology.
This specific pairing allows the vibrancy of the teals and the heat of the golds to “breathe,” capturing the tactile essence of the fabric in a format that will last for generations.
This is more than a print. It is a piece of the guild’s heartbeat.
